National Cholesterol Education Month

National Event Posted: Friday, September 3, 2021

Goodall-Witcher Healthcare recognizes September 2021 as National Cholesterol Education Month.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), heart disease is the number one leading cause of death in the U.S. More than one million Americans have a heart attack each year and about 500,000 die of heart disease. High blood cholesterol is one of the major risk factors for heart disease, causing heart attack and stroke. About 38% of American adults have high cholesterol. High cholesterol has no signs or symptoms, so the only way to know if you have it is to get your cholesterol checked.

Talk to your health care team about how you can manage your cholesterol levels and lower your risk. Strong evidence shows that eating patterns that include less dietary cholesterol are associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, but your overall risk depends on many factors.
